The 2020 Porsche Macan GTS is a fast and luxurious SUV. Following a 1-year absence, the GTS returns to the Macan lineup with a bit more power, slotting between the Macan S and Macan Turbo. Kelley Blue Book’s Karl Brauer traveled to Portugal to be one of the first to experience the 2020 Macan GTS’s enhanced performance.
Hi, I’m Karl Brauer with Kelley Blue Book and I’m here driving the 2020 Porsche Macan GTS at the Estoril racetrack near Lisbon, Portugal.
This is the brand-new version of the GTS, it replaces the one that was out two years ago and for this year the 2.9-liter V6 twin turbo under this hood now makes 375 hp and 383 pound-feet of torque. That’s 15 more horsepower and 14 more pound-feet than the last version of the Macan GTS. That delivers this car to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, or 4.5 seconds if you’ve got the Sport Chrono package.
It’s a good example of how Porsche is packaging GTS, and the performance that it represents, along with a lot of exterior features and suspension features to keep the performance theme alive.
For instance, this car sits 25 mm lower than any of the other Porsche Macans out there. It’s actually the lowest center of gravity Porsche Macan from the full line. It sits between the Macan S and the Macan Turbo, right between there in terms of its performance. but it’s got this, again, package with all these things that come standard. Really, about 5,000-plus dollars of additional performance enhancements, both inside, out and underneath, that a Macan S doesn’t have.
Some of the trademark features you’ll notice on the new 2020 Macan GTS is kind of this darkened or black theme throughout the exterior. You see things like the darkened headlight lenses, the darkened front grille, the black satin wheels. Then in the back you see a specific black rear spoiler on the roof, and you see a rear diffuser that’s also a specific kind of design in a darkened color for the GTS models. It helps you identify these vehicles, but if that still hasn’t convinced you what you’re looking at you do have the black lower stripe along the doors where, within the stripe itself, if you look closely you can actually see GTS.
Slide inside the 2020 Macan GTS and a series of upscale features are standard. You get to have the 10.9-inch display right here in front of you. But you also get alcantara seats with embossed “GTS” headrests. You get this great brushed aluminum trim throughout, and then you get things like cordless charging for your phone and of course standard Apple CarPlay. It’s really a good collection to keep the upscale performance theme going, established by both the hardware that’s in this vehicle as well as the dynamics when you’re out driving it.
And really that’s the last thing to mention about this vehicle. It is a performance car, but it’s also a luxury car. And they really brought those things together in the GTS. It’s fast, it’s one of the quickest Macans they’ve made, short of the Turbo. The GTS has better performance than the Macan S, and it’s got incredibly good driving dynamics. It’s tuned to handle well and again with the 25 mm lower ride height it’s actually the lowest center of gravity one they offer, which means it’s got some of the best handling and most confidence around corners. Steering feel, all the things you expect from a Porsche, they are here with these GTS models.
As is common with Porsche GTS models the new 2020 Macan GTS comes packed with great value. If you were to equip a Macan S with the same level of feature content, it would be about $5000 more than this vehicle comes standard. And of course, the Macan S will not have this kind horsepower, it will not have the 25 mm lowered ride height for better dynamic performance. This car is a great value and it’s excellent for people who want to have fun on the weekends as well as a daily driver that very comfortable. If you’re looking for another option in your Macan shopping, the GTS is well packaged and it’s worth your consideration.
